UPS bests on what Big Brown can do for it

UNITED PARCEL SERVICE OF AMERICA IS PLACING ITS BETS ON BIG Brown, the Kentucky Derby champion named after UPS' slogan, “What can Brown do for you?” Big Brown got his name after Paul Pompa Jr., owner of Truck-Rite Corp. in Brooklyn, N.Y., and the original owner of the horse, renewed his freight contract with UPS last year. Pompa had just purchased the thoroughbred, and he named his horse Big Brown to celebrate his relationship with UPS. Earlier this year, UPS became the sponsor of Big Brown jockey Kent Desormeaux, who rode Big Brown to victory in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. UPS became the official marketing partner of Desormeaux and IEAH Stables, the ownership group behind Big Brown, for his attempt at the Triple Crown championship run at Belmont Park June 7 (after press time). —Kate Maddox
