Sunnyvale, Calif.—Yahoo plans to buy the online content-generating company Associated Content for a reported $100 million. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter.
Associated Content currently pays some 380,000 freelancers to produce text, images and video on a multitude of subjects, and sells ads around that content. Yahoo said it plans to use Associated Content material to supplement online material currently produced by its own editorial staff and news feeds, and to partner with publishers to customize various topics into “something bespoke and even more engaging.”
While Associated Content's contributor base is primarily in the U.S., Yahoo said it intends to expand this globally.
