Popeyes stalks pizza home deliveries to promote its own family bundles
Popeyes is trying to boost interest in its delivery by chasing after people who are ordering pizza.
In a new video, a driver with a bag from Popeyes is shown following around a pizza delivery driver. Once the pizza is delivered, the Popeyes driver asks the pizza purchaser if they’d like to swap their pizza for a Popeyes Family Meal.
Often, but not always, the answer is yes.
Popeyes hinted at the campaign theme on Twitter on Wednesday when it tweeted “pizza”—a one-word tweet that led to plenty of engagement with restaurant brands, other marketers and people on the social media platform. Some wondered whether the fried chicken chain would be coming up with its own pizza product.
No, fried chicken pizza is not coming to Popeyes (though, let’s be honest, we’d totally try that). The chain is sticking to products such as bundles of fried chicken and, of course, its popular fried chicken sandwich. It’s offering its meals as an alternative to pizza.
The move comes as both Popeyes and pizza chains, in general, have been doing brisk business during the coronavirus pandemic. Perhaps reminding people that Popeyes delivers may help provide a boost as it nears the first anniversary of its chicken sandwich, introduced in August 2019. The family meal featured in the spot doesn’t include the sandwich, though of course that can be delivered too. The bundles include pieces of chicken, side items and biscuits.
The actor in the video from Gut was not an actual Popeyes restaurant employee but the customers he approaches are real people who ordered pizza for dinner that night, the brand says. The footage was shot in Portland, Oregon.
