Creativity 50 2013: Hung Huang

Hung Huang is a Chinese media mogul who’s drawn comparisons to Oprah and Anna Wintour.

One of her many roles is publisher of fashion magazine iLook, uncovering up-and-coming Chinese designers. Realizing that they needed help with sales and marketing, in 2010 she launched a shop in Beijing called Brand New China. It gave the fledgling designers a place to showcase their pieces—and sell them, too.

More recently, Ms. Hung became director of Beijing's Gehua Design Museum, organizing exhibit space, a library and seminars for young designers. She's creating an alliance among designers, manufacturers and retailers to make it easier to produce fashion pieces commercially.

China’s design industry is nascent, but full of potential for those willing to take a risk on someone unknown. “Not only does China not lack creativity, the younger you go, the better they get,” she said.
