Unilever sees growth on flat sales

[london] Unilever announced 10% growth in pre-tax profits to $7.3 billion on flat sales of $56 billion for 2002. The biggest increase was in the company's promotions budget, which Chairman Niall FitzGerald said grew by 8.5% in 2002 to $7.3 billion, accounting for 14% of sales. He said the company is also making rapid progress in refocusing on core brands, cutting the number of existing Unilever brands from 1,600 in early 2000 to 750 today.
