Al Primo was on the horn from Greenwich. The guy who created "Eyewitness News" in Philly at KWY-TV and in `68 moved on to New York's WABC-TV is back and brainstorming again. On Sept. 27 he'll go on the air with "Eyewitness Kids News," a 30-minute weekly program not on cable but over 135 stations (and building), most airing it Saturdays & Sundays. They have a Web site, are placing the show on barter basis (Al gets three minutes of national commercial time to sell), they've cut a deal with AP to shoot kids overseas, there'll be a three minute window for local kids news inserts. Production by Alan Weiss Productions, New York, starts next month. But why now? I asked "El Primo." Said Al, "When the sniper began shooting in Washington, the shuttle crashed, war broke out, there wasn't a single story of how these events affected kids. No kids on TV beyond a classroom sending notes to GIs." Early sign-ons: KABC in L.A.; WCVB, Boston; WESH, Orlando; KTVK, Phoenix; plus Fox, WB and lots of indie stations reaching 75% of the country.
