The Buzz bleats out news of another gambling-themed indie mag slated for an imminent launch. Avery Cardoza's Player hits newsstands in October with its debut issue; Jaqk (think "jack-ace-queen-king"), which goes for the affluent men's lifestyle niche wrapped 'round a "risk-and-reward" concept, is shifting its planned launch from this fall to March, citing maxed-out `03 advertiser budgets. Player's distribution at launch will be 100,000, on newsstands, in as-yet-unset hotels, and to charter subscribers. Full-color ad pages are $7,250. Branding comes courtesy of gambling entrepreneur Avery Cardoza, who leveraged (what his bio claims were) pre-legal age successes at the tables into a publishing and computer game mini-empire-and, yes, a world view. "It's not just going to be casinos" in terms of advertisers, Publisher and Editor in Chief Cardoza says. "It's also alcohol and tobacco." A Sin City trifecta if The Buzz ever heard one! Speaking of sin, look for columns featuring what the mag calls "The Seven Deadlies": Pride (fashion); Greed (money management) Sloth (gadgets for relaxing); Envy (high-end product reviews); Anger (rants) Gluttony (dining) and a female sex columnist pitching in with Lust. How does Cardoza like the odds? "Most people are saying nine outta 10, we're gonna make it," he says, and touts his gambling and book-publishing bona fides. If he's right, the title will publish every other month next spring. But Cardoza says advertisers ain't set yet.
