CBS has fired long-time "60 Minutes" producer Jeff Fager, saying he "violated company policy."

"It is our commitment to uphold these policies at every level," CBS News President David Rhodes said in a statement.

The New Yorker this summer reported allegations that Fager, who had been at CBS News for more than three decades, touched employees inappropriately and enabled a culture of bad behavior inside the organization. Earlier this week, The New Yorker ran another story with a new claim from a producer who was an intern at CBS in the 2000s. She said Fager groped her at a work party.

Rhodes said Fager's ouster was "not directly related to the allegations surfaced in press reports, which continue to be investigated independently."

In a statement, Fager again denied the allegations in The New Yorker, calling them "false" and saying they were not the reason for his exit.

"They terminated my contract early because I sent a text message to one of our own CBS reporters demanding that she be fair in covering the story," he said. "My language was harsh and, despite the fact that journalists receive harsh demands for fairness all the time, CBS did not like it. One such note should not result in termination after 36 years, but it did."

Fager's departure comes just days after CBS CEO Leslie Moonves was ousted from the company amid at least a dozen accusations of sexual misconduct, also reported in The New Yorker.

Bill Owens, executive editor at "60 Minutes," will step in to manage the "60 Minutes" team while a search for a replacement is conducted.

Fager was named chairman of CBS News in 2011, overseeing the transition on "Evening News" between Dan Rather and Katie Couric. He also introduced "CBS This Morning" in January 2012.

Charlie Rose, who hosted the morning news show alongside Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell, was dropped from the show in November following sexual misconduct allegations.
