Score one for media manipulators. That video that surfaced over the weekend that seemed to show a naked man crawling from a Buckingham Palace window was actually faked by E! to promote its new scripted series "The Royals."
While media outlets quickly ascertained the video was a hoax, knowing that didn't stop People.com, the New York Daily News and Huffington Post, among others, from reporting on it. (See: "Did a Naked Man Really Climb Out of Buckingham Palace?") There was likewise plenty of social media chatter over the identity of the man and origin of the video.
Since going live in the U.K. on Friday, the "tourist video," which shows a man wearing just one sock climbing out of the palace by a bed sheet only to fall out of sight, has received over 1.1 million views on YouTube.
The stunt was part of a broader campaign from BBH Los Angeles to promote E!'s first scripted series, "The Royals," which begins March 15.
E! planned to reveal the true nature of the video during the "Today" show Tuesday morning on NBC, a sibling network within NBC Universal. [UPDATE: "Today" did not air anything Tuesday on the video or hoax.]
