HLN's New Shows Are Not Kidding About a Social-Media Emphasis

Sometimes TV networks announce "relaunches" that ultimately amount to tweaking to the logo or sprinkling a new catchphrase throughout the same programming as before.

But HLN, sibling channel of CNN, seems to be taking a pretty serious leap into its new role as a hub for social media, introducing an initial development slate that includes a game show for internet addicts, a series curating satire cartoons and a new app.

The lineup comes after the cable news network said last month that it is repositioning itself as a home for the social media generation, bidding to reach millennial viewers by becoming the TV companion to the content they consume all day elsewhere.

Early programs in development include (all working titles):

  • "Keywords," a game show that tests your knowledge of keywords.
  • "I Can Haz NewsToons," curating satirical cartoons from e-cards, caricatures and doodles from around the internet.
  • "One. Click. Away," about stories behind online classifieds, like the unused wedding dress for sale on Craigslist or strange roommate ads.
  • "Vacation Hunters," pitting two vacation adventurers and their travel agent teams against each other to stretch a vacation dollar -- based on viewers' Tweets.
  • "Videocracy," counting down the most talked about entertainment news on social media.

HLN will also roll out an app, #What'sYourFomo, which collects personalized lists of users' fears of missing out.

The network previously acquired "RightThisMinute," a syndicated show repackaging videos and stories found online.

HLN has long been known for its coverage of high-profile criminal trials, most recently seeing huge spikes in viewership during Jodi Arias murder case. But covering court cases isn't an appealing business proposition, CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker said late last year.
