Madhulika Sikka, the former NPR News executive editor who joined the digital media startup Mic in September 2015, has left the company, a spokeswoman confirmed to Ad Age. Her last day as executive editor was Friday, March 11.
"We wish her nothing but the best and thank her for her contributions to the company," the spokeswoman said.
Cory Haik, who recently joined Mic from The Washington Post as chief strategy officer, will assume the company's top editorial role, according to the spokeswoman.
"I had a wonderful time," Ms. Sikka told Ad Age of her time at Mic. "I learned a lot. But ultimately I think it wasn't quite the right fit for me. We talked it through and we both agreed that an amicable separation was the way to go."
Ms. Sikka's appointment was heralded in a June 2015 article in The New York Times, which called her "by far the most prominent hire for Mic since its founding in 2011 as PolicyMic."
Mic is among the new breed of digital media companies that produce multiplatform news and lifestyle coverage for millennials by millennials. And, like BuzzFeed, another larger member of that category, branded content drives a significant portion of Mic's revenue.
"I don't know what I'm going to do next," Ms. Sikka said when asked about her plans. "I learned a lot. I've got a lot of journalism left in me. ... Being at the digital forefront is exactly where I want to be at this stage of my career, and hopefully I'll continue to do that."
