Bell Atlantic

Type of test: Market trial of interactive and analog programming in Fairfax County, Va.; also constructing a commercial analog and digital network in Dover Township, N.J.

Duration: Six months.

Launch: Market trial will begin in May with 2,000 homes passed, ramping up to 20,000 with regulatory approval. Commercial network will sign up its first customers this summer; 38,000 homes passed.

Services: Market trial will include video on demand and home shopping; participating retailers include Nordstrom, Lands' End and J.C. Penney Co. FutureVision of America is helping program the commercial network.


Type of test: Technical and market trial in DeKalb County and Chamblee, Ga.

Duration: 18 months.

Launch: Technical trial slated to begin this summer. Market trial scheduled for early 1996, with 12,000 homes passed.

Services: Interactive video (movies on demand and games), personal computer services (including access to online services) and transactional services such as home shopping.


Network plans: Commercial video dial-tone networks in Clearwater, Fla.; Ventura County, Calif.; and Honolulu. Manassas, Va., will be added later.

Launch: Pending regulatory approval.

Services: Video on demand, pay-per-view and mainStreet, an interactive cable TV network.

Network plans: Commercial broadband network reaching 1.3 million potential customers during the first phase of construction.

Services: Traditional cable TV and movies on demand initially; videogames and home shopping later.

SBC Communications

Network plans: Commercial rollout of interactive video network in Richardson, Texas; up to 47,000 homes passed within two years. Working with Microsoft Corp.

Launch: Spring 1996.

Services: Traditional broadcast and cable TV, video on demand and near video on demand, education, games and shopping.
