Though she's only 35, Susan Smith, a designer/director at San Francisco's WIG, a Western Images design boutique spinoff, has "long been obsessed with the female spy a la Emma Peel, and all similar aspects of '60s pop culture," she says. "I was even in a go-go surf band in my youth." Nevertheless, she was unaware of the Avengers movie at the time she proposed a groovy retro :60 for the Curious Pictures reel open (she's repped there for live action): A woman being pursued by graphic objects, who finds sanctuary in the Curious question mark icon. While there's also a 007 influence, "I'm more interested in the B-level TV spy genre, like The Man From U.N.C.L.E, The Saint and I Spy," says Smith, who researched vintage show opens for the project.
