Stock in Sears Holdings, after a hot streak and then months of listless trading, ended its first year 43› above where it started when Kmart bought Sears March 24, 2005. It's generating profits, but not necessarily sales; Kmart stores' fiscal '05 comp-store sales fell 1.2% while Sears stores' comp sales plunged 8.4%. The company says Sears' sales fell mainly because of an effort to improve gross margins by cutting back on promotions. That means less advertising.
