America Online said worldwide membership is up about 42% this year, and users are spending more than 20% more time on its network. The No. 1 online service said its more than 17 million members are currently averaging 55 minutes online daily, up nearly 10 minutes from a year ago. AOL said it now supports more than 1.1 million members on its service during peak hours, about double the prime-time cable audiences of CNBC and CNN. AOL announced it hit 16 million members on Feb. 9.
