CBS eyes all-news channel

CBS President-CEO Peter Lund made it clear that contrary to published reports, the network is looking at ways to expand the "scope and platform" of CBS News including the possibility of developing a 24-hour news channel.

Mr. Lund's statement came after Group W Satellite Communications President Don Mitzner told a reporter Tuesday that CBS would not imminently start a news service similar to CNN.

"I overstated an answer to a specific question," Mr. Mitzner said later, adding that the company continues to look at many options including joint ventures and alliances. "The No. 1 priority is to do something to brand out the CBS name and capabilities with Group W Satellite Communications. We're talking to lots of folks and exploring avenues. But there's nothing currently to say that we jump for at this point or in the next 30 to 60 days."
