BEIJING -- China has 1.06 million Internet subscribers, according to figures collated at the end of May by the China Internet Information Centre.

Statistics show there are as many as 518,000 personal computers linked with the Internet and the current soccer World Cup '98 in France is attracting more people to surf the Internet for interesting news about the tournament.

However, the high cost of connection to the Internet, slow transmission and the dominance of English remain obstacles hampering many consumers from signing up and making full use of the Internet.

Experts say the pen-input system may emerge as a bridge connecting the Internet and the common Chinese people. It forecasts an increasing number of people will use the pen-input system to use the Internet or send E-mail over the coming years.
