CKS hires Poppe chief

CKS Group named Fergus O'Daly president of its new CKS Partners East Coast region. Mr. O'Daly had been chairman of competitor Poppe Tyson, New York. Until recently, he had also been president-CEO of the agency but relinquished those titles to Kevin Clark, an outside director of the agency. Mr. O'Daly subsequently reported to Mr. Clark.

The departure is the latest in a string of negative news at Poppe. The agency in March pulled a planned initial public offering and last month laid off about 20% of the Mountain View, Calif., office. Its top interactive executive, David Carlick, also left earlier this year.

Most recently, True North Communications has renewed discussions to acquire Poppe parent Bozell, Jacobs, Kenyon & Eckhardt. It's unclear what would happen to Poppe if the acquisition came to pass.

CKS Group Chairman-CEO Mark Kvamme said he approached Mr. O'Daly about the CKS job only last week and that the two men came to an agreement Tuesday night. Mr. O'Daly will run CKS' New York and Washington offices as well as manage new acquisition SiteSpecific.

"We want to be very, very serious on the East Coast," Mr. Kvamme said. "When I saw what was happening over at Poppe, I gave him a call and things proceeded very, very quickly."

Tom Suiter, currently CKS president, becomes president of the West Coast region. He remains chief creative officer of the parent company.
