CNBC Asia teams up with Nikkei in Japan

TOKYO--Nihon Keizai Shinbum and CNBC Asia have launched Japan'sfirst joint TV business news venture. Nikkei CNBC will bring together Nikkei's TV news service, Nikkei Satellite News, and CNBC Japan.

Nikkei CNBC is available as part of all local entry packages offered by both digital satellite broadcasters in Japan, SKYPerfecTV and DirecTV. The new service will be initially available in nearly 2.5 million households. Prior to the joint venture, Nikkei Satellite News reached 2.25 million homes while CNBC reached 200,000 homes.

Nikkei President Takuhiko Tsuruta says, "With the liberalization of Japan'sfinancial markets and the globalization of the economy, we are faced with greater need for the most up-to-date business information, in-depth analysisand commentary by the experts. By consolidating the potential and the information of the three leading economic news services in the world - NIKKEI, CNBC and Dow Jones - we will be able to satisfy viewer needs and create the most reliable and influential 24-hour news channel in Japan."

CNBC Asia President Paul France adds, "The service is designed for the Japanese audience with original Japanese programming and is an important step for CNBC Asia in our strategy to increase localization."

The new service is predominantly a Japanese-language channel comprisinglive programming, business and general news, and live real-time stock market and financial data during the day. Live programming from CNBC's U.S. feed will air overnight.
