The bizarre saga of Andrew Cunanan and the most famous victim of the swath of violence attributed to him-fashion designer Gianni Versace-set off a media sensation in July, collecting 8 points and the Cover Story prize for the month. Time, Newsweek, People and even Business Week featured one or both of the pair, all in July 28 issues.

Second place was a three-way tie, with Princess Diana, pop singer Jewel and talk show hostess Kathie Lee Gifford all collecting 7 points apiece.

Fifth place belonged to Julia Roberts, winning 5.5 points with publicity surrounding her summer movies "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "Conspiracy Theory." The race for sixth place drew four contestants, with "Contact" co-stars Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey both earning 4.5 points, along with departing "Good Morning America" co-host Joan Lunden and the late film legend Jimmy Stewart.

TV darling Jenny McCarthy moved into 10th place, with 4 points.
