Daimler-Benz unit may sell German marketing operations

BERLIN--Daimler-Benz Interservices (debis for short), a subsidiary of Stuttgart-based Daimler-Benz, says it may sell off debis Marketing Services.

A debis spokesman confirms that negotiations about a sell-off are in progress and says a decision is expected by the end of this month.

Juergen Schrempp, Daimler-Benz AG's CEO, is determined to divest debis of all units which do not reach a profit of 12% of turnover. debis Marketing Services has annual sales of $570m. It consists of media independent debis G.F.M.O., which has offices in Hamburg, Frankfurt and Stuttgart; Fairs & Exhibitions; Marketing Consulting; and Leonberg-based ad agency GPP (Godenrath, Preiswerk & Partner).

debis linked up with Daimler-Benz in 1993 and with GPP in 1995. Marketing industry insiders consider that Daimler-Benz paid too high a price for G.F.M.O. and GPP.
