Coupon distribution fell 10% to 276 billion last year as marketers shifted funds into frequent-shopper cards and electronic discounts, according to CMS' annual survey of promotion industry practices. Redemption fell 18% to 4.8 billion, attributable to a 48% decline of in-ad coupons, said CMS, a promotional redemption services company based in Winston-Salem, N.C. Other findings: Newspaper free-standing inserts accounted for 92% of all coupons distributed, up from 91% in '96; and the average coupon face value increased 2%, from 60 cents in '96 to 61 cents last year.

Bacardi-Martini USA next month launches the "Bacardi Sailing Adventure" sweepstakes, offering one grand prize winner and three guests an expenses-paid Caribbean holiday including the chance to learn to sail and race a yacht. Windsurfing, diving and charter boat fishing will be prizes in upcoming sweepstakes in the "Adventure" series; consumers can enter at the point of purchase. The promotion is handled in-house.

Southern Progress Corp.'s Cooking Light is teaming with MarketSource, Cranbury, N.J., for its sixth annual "Ask Cooking Light" mobile marketing tour. The tour hits the road next month, visiting 50 cities through the summer with stops at supermarkets, festivals and fairs.
