Deere & Co. broke ground on a new PGA Tour golf course on land donated by the farm and heavy equipment manufacturer near its Moline, Ill., headquarters, as part of a long-term golf sponsorship unprecedented in its category. Deere becomes the official golf course equipment supplier of the PGA Tour, replacing Jacobsen. It will also become title sponsor of the John Deere Classic, to be held at the new course in 1999, in a deal that runs through 2006. Next year, Deere will serve as title sponsor of the Quad City Classic.

Ericsson Corp. is running a $1 million consumer sweepstakes for Los Angeles area residents to back the mobile phone marketer's sponsorship of the 1997 World Championships of Beach Volleyball, Sept. 10 to 13 in L.A. The promotion will award VIP tickets to the event to 25 winners; one of those winners will be randomly chosen to serve a volleyball at a designated target. If successful, the contestant will win $1 million. Additional prizes of tickets to events leading up to the championships will be awarded to 150 consumers. Entry is available through Ericsson dealerships or by calling a toll-free number.
