MCI Communications Corp., Washington, said it plans to offer local phone service in 13 additional cities by next year. Pending final state regulatory approvals, the cities include Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Phoenix and San Francisco. MCI already offers service in 12 cities including Chicago, New York, Boston and Atlanta.

General Mills, Minneapolis, this week breaks two new commercials for the improved taste of its Honey Nut Cheerios via Saatchi & Saatchi Kids' Connection, New York.

Richards Group, Dallas, said it will open an Atlanta office, Richards & Shutze, to be headed by former BBDO South Chairman-Chief Creative Officer Virgil Shutze. The office will pursue new business in the Southeast, and already is pitching Value Rent-a-Car, Boca Raton, Fla. Two of Richards' key clients, Home Depot and Chick-fil-A, are based in Atlanta.

Ocean Spray Cranberries, Lakeville-Middleboro, Mass., is moving its Lightstyles juice, a low-calorie product made with NutraSweet, into select Midwestern markets. Formerly distributed only on the East Coast, the product -- in phased rollout -- isn't yet supported by advertising. North Castle Partners, Stamford, Conn., handles.

Unum Corp., Portland, Maine, today launches the disability insurer's first TV campaign, an eight-week, $5 million to $10 million network run from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco.
