(June 12, 2001) -- In his first speech as new chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, Tim Muris today praised the former chairman, Robert Pitofsky, and the advertising industry's self-regulatory efforts under the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

Speaking at a Washington anti-trust forum, Mr. Muris suggested he and Mr. Pitofsky agree on a number of advertising issues and any differences in approach on anti-trust matters would be "at the margins."

He also called the work of the National Advertising Division "a model of self-regulation."

A longer version of Mr. Muris' speech than what was delivered can be found on the FTC'S Web site. -- Ira Teinowitz
