SAN FRANCISCO-The Gap Inc., attempting to spur sales amid stiff competition in its basics business, this month moves into a new line of "green" body and bath products at 52 of its U.S. and six Canadian stores.

GapScents, free of animal byproducts and testing, comes in four fragrances with fanciful ingredients. Some of the products are packaged in fully recyclable aluminum containers, and all cardboard packaging is made from recycled material, the company said.

The fragrances also carry a whimsical environment-friendly appeal. For example, the scent simply called "day" contains "warm sun and citrus" and another fragrance, earth, has "fresh air and sage."

The two other centerpiece fragrances are grass, described as "the nostalgic scent of freshly cut clover," and heaven, "a simple bouquet of pure white blossoms."

Each fragrance in available in nine products- glycerin soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, bath salt, eau de toilette, an aromatic candle that burns for 40 hours, and a travel set consisting of 2-ounce bottles of shower gel, shampoo and lotion.

Prices range from $2.50 for the soap to $18 for the eau de toilette, with most products in the $7.50 range.

Gap advertising is done in-house and the company, as usual, didn't announce any marketing plans.
