Catalina Marketing Corp., St. Petersburg, Fla., acquired Chicago-based attitudinal research company Market Intelligence for $1 million in an effort to expand its consumer research capabilities. An additional $1 million may be paid contingent upon business performance.

Harte-Hanks, San Antonio, is partnering with e-marketing solutions provider, Chicago, to extend its customer relationship management and database marketing capabilities to the Web. The No. 15 marketing services agency aims to leverage its data analytics against the permission-based infrastructure of Coolsavings to track the effectiveness of online marketing and offer a broader range of marketing solutions to bricks-and-mortar and Web-based clients.

Valassis Communications, Livonia, Mich., is partnering with VNU Marketing Information, New York, to help grocery retailers create targeted customer communications based on frequent-shopper data. The new venture, called Valassis Relationship Marketing Systems, couples the direct mail and e-mail marketing programs delivered by Valassis' Relationship Marketing Group with the technology of VNU's Retail Marketing Systems, which provides loyalty-marketing software enabling grocery retailers to store and analyze consumer data.
