The ad business cost a man his life last week.

Death came instantly for TV personality Vladislav Listyev, who was gunned down at his Moscow apartment building.

Shaken compatriots labeled it a contract killing. The slaying of Mr. Listyev, and other developments around the globe, point out that while advertising may be a brave new world for emerging countries, it can also be a brutal world.

The reform-minded Mr. Listyev got in the middle of a scuffle between Russian Public Television and a small group of Russian ad agencies that have exclusive rights to sell airtime on the network.

Mr. Listyev and others at the network were trying to get rid of the middlemen. That was said to have resulted in his assassination.

Meanwhile, U.S. marketers expressed relief last week when China agreed to crack down on illegal pirate industries. The move derailed the threat of soaring tariffs in both countries.

Closer to home, Luis Carlos Mendiola Codina, Mexican adman and president of the International Advertising Association, warned that his country's current economic paroxysms could send its ad industry into a two-year tailspin.
