(March 29, 2001) -- Jaguar Cars Ltd., owned by Ford Motor Co., said today it appointed WPP Group's Y&R Advertising to be its global creative ad agency. As first reported in Advertising Age Feb. 5, Y&R will succeed the Global Communications Group, the 3-year-old joint venture of WPP siblings' J. Walter Thompson Co. and Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide. Jaguar had denied the report.

The estimated $125 million account will be handled by Y&R's network of worldwide offices, but coordinated by its London office.

"Changing advertising agencies is always a difficult process, but we felt that Jaguar's long-term interests were better served through one global advertising partner," said Jonathan Browning, managing director of Jaguar, Coventry, England.

Y&R also handles Ford's Lincoln and Mercury brands in the U.S. and last fall won the automaker's estimated $75 million lead global Land Rover account, which the U.K.-based sport utility marketer says is mainly for outside the U.S. Omnicom Group's GSD&M, Austin, Texas, handles Land Rover of North America's $35 million account. -- Jean Halliday
