JWT buys Brazilian direct marketing shop

J. Walter Thompson Co. has acquired direct marketing agency Copyright, Sao Paulo, which will be called Thompson Connect Worldwide. Agency founders Gustavo Dias Leite and Deyse Dias Leite will remain in the company as account director and creative director, respectively, while Nuno Paes, a Portuguese executive, has been hired from abroad to head the outfit. Clients include Unibanco bank and Yahoo!.

Other recent agency additions include ad agency Master and interactive division CollectiveMind. The group also plans to open a retail specialist, to buy a promotions agency and to establish a partnership with telemarketing/database company Interact.

"Our billings will reach $265 million this year," says Alvaro Novaes, the president of J. Walter Thompson in Brazil.
