Lowe brings in British unit chief as CEO in U.S.

To strengthen its North American management team, Lowe Lintas & Partners Worldwide will move U.K. Chief Executive Paul Hammersley to New York from London in the new role of U.S. CEO, people familiar with the move told Ad Age Feb. 28. He will join the current two-man U.S. top management team of Gary Goldsmith, who is chairman and chief creative officer, and President Rob Quish.

The New York office was the hardest-hit in both client losses and management restructuring in the wake of the Nov. 1999 merger between Interpublic Group of Cos. siblings Lowe & Partners Worldwide and Ammirati Puris Lintas.

Mr. Hammersley, who won't move to New York until later this year, is expected to be the last major change in the New York agency's senior management lineup. After a poor 2000, Lowe Lintas has started winning accounts again this year, picking up business from Unilever's Bestfoods, Virgin Mobile and MassMutual Financial Services Group.

Mr. Hammersley, currently chief executive of Lowe's highly successful London agency, worked in New York for the Lowe Group in the 1990s as executive VP with responsibility for global business development. He also oversaw the U.S. and international Coca-Cola business. He moved back to London in 1997 as managing director of Lowe's U.K. agency Lowe Howard-Spink, keeping his Coke assignment, and was promoted to chief executive of the newly merged Lowe Lintas & Partners agency in London in Nov. 1999. In London, he will be succeeded by Chris Thomas, now managing director.
