Lufthansa to sponsor live auctions in regional Asian Web sites

MANILA--Lufthansa German Airlines is to sponsor liveauctions in some of its Asian regional Web sites on the Internet as part of efforts to push on-line ticketing.

"We are really pushing our on-line ticketing service," said Stefan Pichler, the company's VP-sales. Lufthansa is targeting sales of 71,000 tickets via the Internet this year.

The scheme will allow Internet surfers to bid for and win airline tickets every time they buy tickets online. The auction will start at the company's Chinese Web site.

In 1998, Lufthansa's online sales of 40,000 tickets accounted for about 8% of the company's total ticket sales. Total online ticket sales represented a 65% increase from 14,000 tickets sold in 1997.

In the first quarter of this year, Lufthansa carried 9.7 million passengers, a 10% increase on the previous year. The number of flights during this period was up 4.9% to 154,658.

Lufthansa is a member of the Star Alliance, together with Air Canada, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways International, United Airlines, Varig, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways and Ansett Australia.
