MCI recruits Santa for new phone card

By Published on .

MCI Communications Corp. has introduced a Santa Switchboard phone card that gives the jolly old elf the ability to record children's wish lists on voice mail.

With a retail price ranging from $5 to $6, the cards will be available at 10,000 outlets nationwide, including Wal-Mart Stores. MCI will promote the card though in-store displays, and retailers are touting the card in ad circulars.

It's one of the three holiday-promotion phone card products from MCI's PrePaid division. The others include a card attached to soda fountain cups of Coca-Cola and a series of cards die-cut into holiday ornament shapes.

With Santa's Switchboard, consumers dial a toll-free number and access a mail box to record a Christmas wish list. One of Santa's elves guides the caller through the process. Santa also talks to the child, ho-hoing and telling them that they made his list of good children.

Parents can send the card to grandparents, relatives or friends who can then access the voice mail box to find out what the child wants for Christmas.
