ABC will create a special on-screen logo next season that will designate programs as "particularly enjoyable for family viewing." The logo will replace the ABC logo now used in the bottom right corner of the screen for every show.
Univision Television Group has agreed to acquire for an estimated $20 million KXLN-TV, Houston, the top Spanish station in its market, from Pueblo Broadcasting Co. This is the second station sale to Univision announced in recent months, with another deal pending in Chicago. Univision will own 11 stations if the two deals are approved by the Federal Communications Commission.
A coalition of consumer groups has accused TV networks of offering too many programs based on heavy merchandising and tie-ins during children's watching hours. The Center for Media Education said that educational shows are often banished to time slots that are frequently pre-empted or rarely viewed by kids.
The accusation came during a congressional hearing looking to measure compliance with the 1990 Children's Television Act.
Toy companies linked to kids' shows pay millions of dollars in advertising to secure the most desirable slots, the group charged.
