Paper Man

Brand: Renault Espace
Title: "Espace"
Agency: Publicis, New York

Beastly SUVs
Marketer: SUV Safety Settlement
Brand: SUV Satey
Title: "Keep It on All Fours"
Agency: Bartle Bogle Hegarty

This curious ad campaign is the result of a legal settlement between Ford Motor Co. and all state attorneys general over Ford Explorers. It is a spot about SUVs that doesn't show any. Instead it features androids called esuvees that are part automotive chassis and part angry buffalo. The setting is that of a rodeo. The commercial is supposed to promote SUV safety. Huh?

Wind-Powered Beer

Brand: Fat Tire Beer
Title: "Anthem"
Agency: Amalgamated, New York

Located in Fort Collings, Colo., New Belgium Brewing is 13-year-old, wind-powered and otherwise environmentally correct brewery whose products are aimed at like-minded people. Its main product is Fat Tire beer and its slogan is "Follow your folly. Ours is Beer."

Board Poppers
Marketer: Quiksilver

Remaining true to the quirky humor tastes of its audience of snow, surf and skate boarders, sporting apparel giant Quiksilver produced this spot for the Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 ESPN Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo. It features a flurry of snow boarders appearing as if they are being individually "popped" like corn.

Dogs, Dogs, Dogs
Marketer: Pedigree
Brand: Pedigree Core
Title: "We're for the Dogs"

What better way to seize the attention of dog-loving TV viewers than a 60-second montage of some of the most hopelessly lovable dogs in action?

Gladys Knight Plays Rugby
Marketer: MBNA
Brand: Financial Services
Title: "Were Into It"
Agency: Helm Agency, New York

In as incongruous a mix of imagery as one can imagine, Gladys Knight is shown joining in a pro rugby game -- in a sequined red dress. The ad points out that she and the game have a lot in common because they both 'have a lot of hits.'

Big Game, Big Screens
Marketer: HP
Brand: 42" Plasma TV
Title: "Chairs"
Agency: Publicis and Hal Riney, San Francisco

Promoting its large plasma screen digital entertainment centers to a pre-Super Bowl audience that is buying larger TVs for the big game, HP takes a light-hearted approach. So many chairs have gathered round the new TV that family members in other parts of the house try to sit on chairs that aren't there.
