Miami Herald launches in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The Miami Herald is to launch a Brazilian edition March 31. The venture is the result of a tie-up between the Brazilian Post and the Knight Rider Group, which owns the newspaper, including nine different Miami Herald editions in other Latin American countries.

Foreign executives and English school students will be targeted by a subscription drive aiming for 4,000 paying read ers by the end of the year, rising to 10,000 over the next three years. Circu lation is forecast to reach 15,000 within that three year period. A promotional cam paign, starting March 26, is via Propeg, Rio de Janeiro.

Investment in the project is $1 million and billings are expected to be $2 million a year, according to Claudio Magnavita of the Brazilian Post. Brazilian Post has pub lished in the English-language since February 1997. From March 31, it will be carried inside the Miami Herald from Monday through Friday.

The two main target groups of readers will be hit with sampling promotions at English schools, airports, hotels and big companies.
