Wally Snyder, American Advertising Federation president-CEO, plans to tell the group's annual conference in Las Vegas that advertising agencies are going to have to pay higher starting salaries if they want to attract young talent.

The Federal Communications Commission on June 16 approved the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE Corp., paving the way for the launch of Verizon Communications. GTE shop Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide and Bell Atlantic agency Lord Group, both New York, created the new Verizon Wireless campaign, but it's not known whether they'll spearhead a brand campaign for the new company.

Jonathan Mandell is leaving his post as chief creative officer at N.W. Ayer & Partners, New York, to pursue other interests. He is succeeded by Jack Cardone, 42, and Michael Grieco, 43, previously exec VP-group creative directors.

Marguerite Kramer and Stacy Morrison to editorial director and editor in chief, respectively, at the upcoming design title One. One is the first publication from One Ventures, founded by former Wired Publisher Dana Lyons.
