The U.S. Supreme Court on April 18 turned away, without comment, a challenge to New York and Chicago ordinances curbing outdoor advertising for cigarettes. Advertisers had argued that federal law pre-empts cities from imposing their own curbs. Also on April 17, the high court let stand, without comment, the decision of a California school district to ban from a high school baseball field an ad featuring the Ten Commandments.

Compaq Computer Corp., Houston, is said to be close to naming an external candidate to oversee advertising and other marketing functions. A spokesman didn't return calls.

Nascar driver Jeff Gordon inked a deal with IMG subsidiary Muhleman Marketing for the unit to represent his worldwide endorsement interests. JG Motorsports will continue to manage Mr. Gordon's licensing and race car sponsorships.
