Mitchell Orfuss, 48, to CEO of Lowe Direct, New York, from president of J. Walter Thompson Direct. He replaces Lynn Fantom, who remains a consultant to parent Lowe & Partners/SMS on direct business development and acquisitions.

John B. Richards to president, North America retail business, Starbucks Coffee Co., Seattle, a new position, from exec VP, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

Larry Tolpin, 45, to the new role of CEO-worldwide creative director, J. Walter Thompson West, San Francisco. Mr. Tolpin, previously regional creative chairman of BBDO Worldwide and CEO-president of BBDO South, Atlanta, will be responsible for overseeing creative for the West Coast, Canada and parts of Asia/Pacific. He will work with David Riemer, president of JWT West and with Ted Nation, president of JWT Canada, Toronto.

Tom Carey, president of BBDO North America will assume the post of interim CEO of BBDO South, while retaining his regular duties. Senior VP-Group Creative Director Ellen Curtis will assume creative responsibilities for the agency.
