Charles B. Strauss, 56, to business group president, home and personal care-North America, Unilever, New York, effective Sept. 1. He previously was president of the Latin American business group. Mr. Strauss succeeds Robert M. Phillips, 60, who will remain as chairman of the North America Committee and retain responsibility for the Calvin Klein and Elizabeth Arden businesses until his retirement next May. Succeeding Mr. Strauss is Ralph Kugler, 43, from exec VP-Latin American group.

James P. Gorman, 40, to exec VP-chief marketing officer, a new post at Merrill Lynch & Co., New York, from senior partner in the financial institutions practice at McKinsey & Co. He will oversee the company's marketing strategies and initiatives worldwide and also sit on the company's executive management committee.

John Zamoiski was elected chairman of the Promotion Marketing Association. Mr. Zamoiski, president of Promotion Development Group, New York, succeeds outgoing PMA Chairman Paul Theroux.
