Excite, Redwood City, Calif., named Andy Halliday as VP-commerce, overseeing the company e-commerce and shopping initiatives. Mr. Halliday was formerly co-president of Simon Brand Ventures, a unit of mall developer Simon Debartolo Group, Indianapolis.

Online grocer Peapod, Skokie, Ill., promoted Dan Rabinowitz to VP-chief financial officer. Mr. Rabinowitz, who was most recently VP-financial planning and control, and treasurer, takes the place of John Miller, who Peapod said resigned to pursue a new venture.

Internet newsgroup directory Deja News, Austin, Texas, named R. Scott Ford, formerly publisher of Atlantic Monthly, exec VP.

Hearst New Media & Technology has named Eliot D. Russman to VP of network marketing, a new position, to further expand the HomeArts brand as the premier resource for women on the Web. Also promoted to newly created positions were Marty Chavkin to VP of e-commerce and database marketing, from director of marketing; and Scott English to VP of new business development, from director of business development.
