PointCast to release new version

PointCast announced PointCast 2.6 is now in beta, a leaner version of its push application that takes up less space on a user's desktop. In surveys PointCast found that 66% of people who'd left the business news service departed for performance reasons. It also found that 84% said they'd try the service again, and 79% agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that ``PointCast is a useful business information tool.''

Old versions of PointCast took up to 45% of a computer's Graphic Display Interface, which could sometimes cause conflicts with other programs running simultaneously. The new 2.6 version reduces GDI usage by 90%, and will only use 5% to 10% of GDI.

In related news, PointCast officially withdrew its Registration Statement for an initial public offering on July 15. Jaleh Bisharat, senior VP-marketing at PointCast, said it withdrew ``because some really exciting opportunities presented themselves. It became clear to us to make a really big play became too attract not to explore.''

Ms. Bisharat said skyrocketing Internet stocks prices have sparked interest from general media companies. ``All of a sudden a lot of players started to look more closely at players with large Internet audiences,'' Ms. Bisharat said. ``We would have loved to do the IPO to use the proceeds to go to the next level.'' But she added, ``Our goal is to win in this space and win big, and the way you often win big is through the right partner.''
