Porsche backs Boxster roadster using two-part screen saver

LONDON -- Porsche is supporting the U.K. launch of the Boxster, the first totally new Porsche in 18 years, with a "mystery" computer screen saver that users must update to solve.

The Porsche Boxster World Time Zone program for PCs will be cover mounted on half a million computer magazines. The screensaver program can also be downloaded from Porsche's Internet site. A public relations campaign will promote both the Internet site and a direct response number to call for a free disk, targeting lifestyle publications and motoring titles.

U.K.-based Global Beach designed the program in the form of a mystery advertisement, featuring exclusive footage of the Porsche Boxster. Last month in Germany Porsche had to increase production rates of the two-seat roadster by 50%, which it only started making on August 19.

The "spy' theme of the screensaver tracks the elusive Porsche Boxster through five countries incorporating seven destinations via the user interface which resembles a satellite tracking station. Six international time zones can be customized to the user's choice of country or city setting.

The program comes in two parts and on December 5 the video transmission will bring together all the elements and mystery in a a 30-second video, available on one floppy disk or by downloading from the Internet site, managed by UUNET Pipex, Europe's largest commercial Internet service provider.
