Before President Clinton's press conference, two influential congressmen were calling on liquor marketers to take new self-regulatory steps and ease pressure for new regulation.

"It might be prudent to reconsider" their abandonment of a self-imposed ban on broadcast ads, said Rep. John Dingell (D., Mich.), the ranking Democratic member of the House Commerce Committee, last month at the American Advertising Federation's annual government affairs conference.

He questioned Federal Communications Commission Chairman Reed Hundt's stance on broadcast liquor ads and said regulation by Congress or the Federal Trade Commission is more likely.

Rep. Billy Tauzin (R., La.), chairman of the House Commerce Committee's telecommunications subcommittee, said he continues to push for some combination of the now-separate codes of the beer, wine and spirits industries.
