RJR chief backs tobacco talks

RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. Chairman-CEO Steve Goldstone said at RJR's annual meeting today that settlement of the tobacco industry's liability and ad regulation issues "is in our interests." Reports of settlement talks, including a possible ban on outdoor tobacco ads and on the use of people in ads, drew immediate reaction in Congress. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, (D., N.J.) joined with two other senators in a letter to President Clinton asking that he insist any settlement require tobacco company acceptance of proposed FDA ad restrictions and agreement to fund anti-smoking ads. "We are on the cusp of victory," he said, "and should not allow the tobacco industry to use a global settlement to turn the tide against necessary protections to the public health."
