(May 23, 2001) -- Out-of-home media company TDI, New York, is launching interactive outdoor advertising campaigns for Palm Inc., Sotheby's and Morgan Stanley this spring and summer in New York.

Consumers will be able to receive marketing messages and other information from outdoor phone kiosks to their Palm handheld devices.

The technology, developed by wireless media company Streetbeam, New York, was tested by TDI -- a unit of Viacom's Infinity Outdoor -- with Banana Republic. Applications include Palm-sponsored SavvyCabby, which calculates estimated cab fare from various Manhattan locations; Sotheby's downloadable spring schedule of antiques shows and auctions; and Morgan Stanley's calendar of financial events.

Streetbeam technology will also debut in San Franciso bus shelters this summer, and TDI hopes the New York programs will lead to expansion throughout the country. -- Cara Beardi
