(Sept. 6, 2001) RIO DE JANEIRO -- Telefonica Italia Mobile (TIM), part of Telecom Italia, has decided to split its advertising business in Brazil between Giovanni FCB and J. Walter Thompson Co., both based in Rio de Janeiro.

No budget was disclosed.

Also pitching for the prestigious telecom account were McCann-Erickson Worldwide and Full Jazz, both Sao Paulo based.

TIM is still holding meetings to decide exactly how the account will be allocated between the agencies. FCB already works with the client in Spain, Chile and Peru, while JWT handles TIM's Mobile Portal ( that brings Internet wireless services to young consumers.

Earlier this year, TIM gained the exclusive rights to offer nationwide coverage of wireless services in Brazil as part of its pledge to invest up to $3.9 billion in Latin America's largest economy for the next three years.

The company said Brazil is its second most important market outside Italy. -- Claudia Penteado
