U.S. leads Cannes short list

The U.S. dominated the TV/cinema commercial short list released at the International Advertising Festival in Cannes, France, Thursday. The U.S. has 108 of the 443 finalist TV and cinema commercials, out of 4,211 entries. The U.K. ranks second with 60 films on the short list, followed by Brazil with 33 and Spain with 32. Final judging continues into Friday.

Favorite commercials so far among Cannes delegates include Pepsi-Cola spots from BBDO, New York (eight are shortlisted), Wieden & Kennedy's Nike spot called "The Wall" and London-based Bartle Bogle Hegarty's Levi's spot, titled "Drugstore." In the Levi's commercial, a young man goes to pick up his date and discovers that her father is the druggist from whom he has just bought condoms.
