Who Loves New York?

Rheingold slams Bloomberg's smoking ban.
Rheingold Beer blasts New York City's smoking ban in a new advertising effort that breaks tomorrow, and already Mayor Michael Bloomberg is blasting back. In one new spot from branding agency Powell and Chelsea Pictures director David Gordon Green, we see people defiantly bringing their own ashtrays to bars, as a slam poet declares, in voiceover, that "This is New York, and we can't sleep until we take it back." But Bloomberg isn't taking any New York attitude from a company that laid off thousands of workers at a Brooklyn plant in the '70s. "Rheingold is a company that walked out on the city 20 years ago," he tells the Associated Press. "They fired 4,000 people almost overnight." Rheingold CEO Tom Bendheim counters that the company is now under different ownership and is "all about New York." Although Rheingold is currently brewed upstate, Bendheim insists that "if capacity existed, we would be brewing in New York City." PLUS: The New York Daily News allegedly spots features and commercials maestro Spike Jonze -- the estranged Mr. Coppola -- canoodling with Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer Karen O.
