Jonathan Elias of bicoastal music house Elias Associates has a CD on the Billboard Classical Crossover chart called The Prayer Cycle. It's a multilingual choral symphony in nine movements, on the Sony Classical label, with music and text by Elias and orchestration by Lawrence Schwartz. Not only did it get an A- in the stingy pages of Entertainment Weekly, it features some rather distinguished guest vocalists from the pop world, including Alanis Morissette, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction. How'd he get such a luminous lineup? "Because they loved the music," says Elias, 42. "I sent a CD of the music to their managers, explained the project, and they just jumped in." He had no previous affiliation with any of them and was barely familiar with Farrell's sound. "He was suggested to me by someone I work with," Elias explains. "He's got a real spiritual side to him."
